Termites, the “Silent Destroyer”

 What do termites look like?

shutterstock_240916069

Termites have 4 wings that are usually double the size of their body but if their wings have been shed then they will have stubs in place of them. They have six legs and their bodies are a dark brown or black in color, the wings are white. Termites also have straight antennas that are on average 3/8”. The length of a termite is up to one centimeter.

What do termites feed on?

Termites will feed on dead plants or trees. They will also feed on dead parts of living plants or trees.

What kind of damage can termites cause?

Termites cause most of their damage to the home, furniture, shelves and books by feeding on these wood materials.

Where to termites live?

Subterranean termites will form their holes in the soil and build tunnels to the above ground. Dry wood termites live within the wood that they consume.

What are are some prevention methods for termite infestation?

By keeping the soil around the foundation dry, it will reduce the access ways to the inside structure. Also, make sure to fix any leaks, keep vents free of blockage and do not plant anything too close to the structure. Make sure to inspect the structure for insect activity periodically to save yourself for costly damages.
