Odorous House Ants: Little Stinkers

Has this every happened to you? After arriving home from a long day you decide that a snack is in order. You go to the kitchen cupboard and open only to find a colony of ants have invaded your home. Chances are that these invaders are called Odorous House Ants and you have a problem that can be a pain to get rid of.

Odorous house ants are small dark brown to shiny black ants, who get their name from the scent that they produce when they are crushed. This scent, a coconut smell, is used by odorous house ants to warn other ants of dangers, as well as a defense against predators.

Odorous house ants are one of the most common pests found in homes, usually intruding in the search of food. The food of choice for odorous house ants is honeydew, a sweet substance created by aphids on plants and trees, but their sweet tooth knows no bounds driving them into homes looking for sweets. In homes odorous house ants will prefer to nest near water sources such as under sinks, or in cupboards where they can be closer to food.

One of the most difficult pests to control, odorous house ants have been known to stress out home owners. Odorous house ants will run around erratically when threatened and send out a sent to other ants in the colony to evacuate. They will then find another place to establish the colony, at times splitting up into multiple colonies causing the problem to get worse.  Odorous house ants also are very sensitive to other scents, so treating them yourself can be very difficult due to the scent within most home remedies.

Because odorous house ants can be so difficult to control it’s always recommended to contact a trained pest control expert when dealing with this stinky home invaders. If not handled correctly the problem and headaches will increase. If you would like more information our ant control service 877-944-4007 or visit our odorous house ant page.
