Swarming Termites - It's The Season

The weather is finally warming up, and with it comes both good and bad news. The good news is that days are getting longer, and we can go outside without 5 layers of clothing. The bad news is now is the perfect time for termites to start swarming. What is a termite swarm you might ask? A termite swarm is when environmental conditions, such as the recent increase in temperature mixed with rain, trigger winged termites to fly from their nest to mate and look for a new place to nest.

Most termites swarm in the spring and will travel anywhere from 600 to 900 feet. Besides weather changes, termite swarms can also be triggered by diminishing food supply, lack of water, and the use of pesticides.

Seeing a termite swarm could be a sign that you have a bigger problem. The most important step when dealing with a swarm is to make sure you identify the type of pests you are dealing with. There are ants that also produce winged adults, and can sometimes be confused with termites.
